Flag of New Zealand  , South Island,
Friday, May 8, 2009

We got off the ferry from Wellington to Picton on the south island and rented a car straight away. This would be our home for the next few days as we tried to see as much of New Zealand as possible without spending much money. Fortunately New Zealand is very well set up to accomodate tourists and there is always plenty of information on free activites in an area. On our journey south we passed through Kaikoura where we saw seals up close and personal, the Lewis pass had beatiful views and snow, and the Franz Josef glacier was very impressive (but not a patch on Argentinas Poreto Moreno). There were several reflective lakes and nice short walks, and lots of scenic lookout stops on the side of the road.
After 3 days of driving our asses needed a break so we stopped in Queenstown to meet up with Melanie who is living there and John who happened to be in the neighbourhood. We climbed a hill with great views over the town and raced some luges. That night, we split up - the lads took Queenstown by storm with some rum and the girls took nearby Wanaka quietly with a pot dinner and a spa. Supertramps overcame the seperation anxiety and after an intense round of crazy golf hit the road again when reunited the next day, .
Continuing south the scenery got so spectacular that around every corner a photo had to be taken. We visited Te Anua. Milford Sound, Invercargill, the Catlins and Dunedin. The pictures speak for themselves.
Before leaving New Zealand we had to return to Queenstown to pick up our new passports and meet another friend Tom before flying out of Christchurch. Our other passports were full and the process of arranging new ones took up a lot of our time on the South island and dampened our spirits. We still enjoyed it though and after driving 3000 Km and crocheting 3 hats, we left for Austrailia a day later than planned but with passports in hand.
