Where I stayed
We weren't really looking forward to returning to San Jose but we were pleasantly surprised. We stumbled across a gem of a hostel which helped - a good kitchen, free breakfast, free laundry and free internet and hot water in the shower. It was a 2 day trek to get there from the Corn islands so we spent a lot of time in the hostel relaxing and very little time exploring San Jose. After 3 nights we carried on to Puerto Viejo in the southeast of Costa Rica on the Caribbean coast. We weren't expecting much in the way of Saint Patricks Day celebrations anywhere in central America, but we found some when we arrived in Puerto Viejo. One bar had a themed night with a band so we hit the bar early in anticipation. We gathered up a bunch of Argentinians and a swiss guy from the hostel, dressed them up in green to get free shots and the rest is history. There was lots of singing and dancing on tables, just like home.
We also got to explore some of Puerto Viejo´s many beautiful beaches on bikes (manual ones) and went for a surf on one of them. It was our first surf in Central America and the big waves favoured some more than others.
