The trip to the Corn islands from Ometepe was a 3 day blitz of boats and b*ses with a night in Granada and in Bluefields along the way. The cramped 10 hour ferry crossing was one to forget with plenty of projectile vomiting over the sides although we held up ok. Luckily it was all worth it. Big and little Corn islands are about 70 km east off the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua, with sandy white beaches and turquoise waters. The people are very laid back and carribbean. They speak a mixture of English, Spanish and Creole making them very difficult to understand and they nearly all had some friendly advice for Sinead to help with her leg.
Diving and snorkelling are the main activities so we waited a couple of days for Sineads leg to recover a bit and went snorkelling off little corn. It went really well despite the sunburn and losing the propellor of our boat. We saw sharks, turtles, barracudas, lots of bright coloured fish and a propellor. Life on the islands was expensive and food variety was limited so we survived on a carbohydrate diet of coconut bread and pasta. Lazing in the hammocks and swimming in the turquoise water was just what we wanted though. We even squeezed in a rum and coke night with some old acquaintances from Guatemala and Ometepe and some new ones from the ferry.
