The decision was made at some point during our last night out in El Salvador that we would skip the bay islands in Honduras for several reasons - we were running out of time in Central America, it was a 2 day detour on chicken b*ses to get there and scuba diving is an expensive activity which we had already done. So we headed for Leon in Nicaragua which was an epic journey itself and unbearably hot. The hostel we stayed in was crawling with drunk teenage Americans and Canadians on the first night but calmed down a bit after that. Leon is a cool colonial city and the main activity there is sand boarding down an active volcano. Itīs possibly the only place in the world to do this so of course we jumped at the opportunity.
The Volcano was a big lump of black sand that just appeared out of the ground 150 years ago and has been getting bigger every couple of years since, most recently in 1999. The trip started with an hour in the back of a dusty pickup so we were already filthy when we reached the volcano. A sweaty and windy hour of a hike to the top carring our sand boards cleaned us up a bit and after admiring the views and checking the volcanic activity we were ready for the crazy descent. Sinead went like a rocket until spectacularly coming off the board and had some chasing to do. She went way too fast for the radar speed guns at the bottom to clock her speed. Mike managed a modest 45km/h just by staying on the board. The tour ended with a Mojito and a shower back at the hostel, both well earned.
