After spending just one night in San Pedro with the girls we knew we would be coming back. Sitting on the beautiful volcanic crater lake Lago Atitlan, San Pedro is small and really chilled out. The streets are more like paths and African drumming, Yoga and Spanish schools are rampant. We rocked on up at 5:59 on Sunday evening and by 6:01 we had arranged a weeklong homestay with Spanish classes starting the next day. The classes alone were $90 US dollars and for an extra $60 we got food, accomodation and lots of activities so it was a good deal. The family we stayed with lived right under the school and we ate our three meals a day with them. The food was good if a bit repetetive usually chicken, rice, beans and corn tortillas. Once we finished our 4 hour class each day at 12, we had the day to ourselves to relax and explore - San Pedro has some ridiculously cool bars. In the evenings the school had activities like Salsa dancing, an Argentinian movie and a talk on the Mayan calendar (boring).
On the saturday we went kayaking on the lake with the school for 2 hours. Afterwards we called into a swimming pool bar and joined in a bowls competition. We just can't believe what happened next. 4 matches later Mike found himself in the final. It was a David versus Goliath battle - Irish rookie versus journeyman Irish-American bowls veteran allstar, known to his fellow regulars as "poor and pathetic Jim". The tension was unbearable and the support was with the underdog, but with a bottle of rum for the winner Goliath had no chance. The crowd went wild and supertramps went a bit wild too. In keeping with tradition, the bottle of rum never left the arena and a night of wild Valentines day celebrations was well and truly underway. We partied hard with fellow bowlers, students and a gas bunch of Danish lads.
So we left San Pedro the next morning on a high and still can't believe Mike won.
