Where I stayed
After having some irreconcilable differences with our hostel manager, we moved to a marginally better place and let the celebrations begin. Unfortunately it was a monday night in a fairly backward town so we were the only ones with anything to celebrate but we made the most of it with a few gallons of beer, some spoons and an unspeakable number of bottles of rum from a very closed looking 24 hour shop window that a simple knock opened very quickly. After several knocks the celebrations were getting a bit out of control with reported sightings of some Austrailian monkey underpants (photos have been censored from blog). It was a great night though and we had the pleasure of an early b*s journey to Flores the next morning to enjoy our hangovers.
Arriving in Coban after a longer than expected b*s journey, we were too lazy to do anything other than check into the first hostel we found even though, like the town itself, it was a bit rough around the edges. It didn't really matter though as we were only using Coban as a base to go see the nearby Semuc Champey and Grutas de Lanquin the next day. These were guidebook highlights and we agreed. Our transport was a pick up truck and we were joined by two Austrailians (Jimbob & Timbob) on the tour. Semuc Champey was a short hike to a spectacular view of the beautiful warm pools we were about to swim in. We dived and lazed about, messing with Jimbobs underwater camera in the paradise like pools for a few hours before we were dragged away to the caves in Lanquin. According to our guide, all the stalictites and stalicmites formed in the image of some animal or bird, but we struggled to see the resemblances. We didn't bother waiting the 3 hours until sunset to see the sky blacken with bats leaving the caves as the dirt road home was supposedly dangerous after dark and besides we had Austrailia day and a supertramp birthday to celebrate
