Soooo, after a lot of thinking about what the best way of getting to and fro Phon Phisai would be, I graciously declined the offer of a lift at 9 am in the morning (fireballs are supposed to happen after sunset!) with Sun's friends. They freaked out just a little and went early in the morning to get a good spot.

So we went by guest house organised truck at around 2 pm and got to Phon Phisai at around 3pm. Turns out is was a great time to come. The little town was already getting into full swing of festivities. We got ourselves a nice spot on the riverbank and then stocked up on snacks and drinks from the many vendors lining the river. Later I went for a little stroll down the river and after 2 km I still couldn't see the end of vendors and people. We are about in the center of things, so that means that there must have been at least 5 km of people lining to catch a glimpse of the wonderous fireballs.

There was a great buzz in the air. Whole families came from far away, granny and granpa, aunt and uncle and the lot... People even pitched tents but I am not sure if they camped there the night before of if it was a clever way to have some shade out there in the open sun.

After sunset people started setting off fireworks and boats started going up and down the river with lovely iluminations. About a kilometer upriver they put at least a thousand floats with candles in the river, which was just magical. There was so much going on that I started to get concerned that I would miss a fireball if there was one.

But turns out that after spending more than 5 hours by that river, we didn't get to glimpse any of the mysterious fireballs. Although quite disappointing, I still had a really lovely day. On the way back the traffic was horrendous and it took us twice as long to get home, although the police blocked off most of the oncoming lanes to create more lanes out of the town.

I wish I could tell you how amazing those fireballs were but it wasn't to be. Ohhhh well.

2008 was a lot better
I was there in 2008 and counted 40 of those fireballs myself (although I missed many others). It's really amazing: I went there as a sceptic, but returned as a believer. I'm not trying to explain the phenomenon any longer to others, but tell them they should go and experience it themselves. My wife and I are going back there in October this year (2009). Too bad that 2007 was a bummer, I hope you will have the opportunity to see it again.
