We traveled with JAL (Japanese airlines, using our free AA miles); what a great airlines, free drinks, comfortable seats, great service; went through Narita, Tokoyo; very modern airport; has to be one of the top in the world. The layover about split our air travel in half which was nice; about 11 hours flight time. Julie and Shelly picked us up in Hilo; and we caught up on the latest news on Shelly and Ben's engagement (proposed in Thailand); We picked up all the postage boxes (as Julie acted as our postal service; receiving boxes from all over southeast asia for us). Its weird to land in Hilo before we departed Manila (funny how the timezones work). Back at the house (which KC cleaned so nice for us); Celebrate with our special passion fruit margaritas at Leiquin's in town. Need to force ourself to stay up late to get back on schedule; but it didn't work; Linda still woke up at 2am. Julie said it had been raining a lot before we got here; but nice so far, only a little rain; and a fair amount of sun.
So in summary: we traveled 7 counties for 108 days; traveling on 22 air flights, 19 boats, 12 relatively public buses; dozens of local transportation (taxi, jeepnees, tricycles) and 10 days of motorcycle rental; and did 15 scuba dives.
Lessons learned: better electronics next time; we bought a light macbook air 2 pounds; upgraded our iPhones; also get a local phone (especially for the philippines, where they are cheap and the locals speak english) also less planning in advance, fewer hotel reservations (except for the big city you are flying into soon); allow for last minute changes, and use Lonely Planet more to direct us to the best areas of town.
Next stop?? Maybe Australia area (Australia, NZ, and some islands nearby)?? For now get ready for the Julia's baby due in May (our first grandchild).
Last entry.
