Wow. I'm writing this from Pedrouzo, just 20km from Santiago. Tomorrow will be my final day.
After Portomarin, where we had another successful pillow fight I walked on about 26km to Palas de Rei. The scenery has changed so much and now I'm walking through very green farmland, lovely little forests and frequent tiny hamlets (many with bars, it's quite a distraction!). I stayed in the Beun Camino albergue but two of my walking buddies decided to carry on to Melide which was a further 15km!! Ouch! I'm glad I stayed put because we had our best pillow fight club yet up by the church. We are all looking forward to the big one: outside Santiago Cathedral at 9pm on Friday night.
Yesterday I experienced my first bit of walking in the rain for the whole trip. I must have put my magic pack cover on a bit late because it didn't work quite as well as it usually does and I had to hide out in a bar for 20 minutes while the rain poured down. I thought I'd seen the last of it but 1km from Ribadiso, my planned stop for the day, it started raining again and I got a bit soaked. There is nothing in Ribadiso except the albergue and a bar/restaurant so I spent the rest of the day with Mark and an American called Colin drinking a local speciality; a mix of red wine and coke, which admittedly sounds dreadful but is actually pretty good.
Today I got up early and got on the road while the sun was still struggling to get above the mist. It was a nice short walk, about 22km and I was glad of it because, you see, I'm fast running out of tread. That's right folks, I've almost walked the soles right off my boots and there's only about 2mm of rubber between me and the road! On the stoney tracks I can feel every stone and my feet are getting quite bruised and tender. My boots will make it to Santiago tomorrow but after that I'll have to retire them for good.
