Our last full day at the Broadmoor and in Colorado Springs began as another beautiful morning. We had to change rooms yesterday since we opted to stay an extra night. It was no big deal and gave us a chance to go through our massive amounts of luggage.

Part of the reason that we elected to stay another day was the long list of activities planned around the resort. Given the extremely dry climate, special approval was given to the hotel to do fireworks tonight.

Other planned activities included a magic show, pool party, carnival, bird demonstrations (more on that below) and lots of other things.

We took a leisurely breakfast and spent some time reading in the morning before heading to the pool. This extra relaxation time ended up costing us a chance to get a lawn chair by the pool. Since the resort was full for the holiday and the pool only has so many lawn chairs and umbrellas we had learned in the past few days to get there early, especially if we wanted an umbrella.

On this morning every lawn chair was taken and we were left with towels on grass which isn't the worst thing ever but certainly a lawn chair and an umbrella are a bonus given the brutal midday Colorado sun.

We ended up spending most of the day by the pool and going down the water slides. I think Canyon set a single day record of going down the slides over 100 times!

The kids went to the little carnival and won lots of little treats. Tymber and Canyon both climbed to the top of the climbing wall--a first! We went by the Hawkquest display and the kids were mesmerized by the bald eagle. We learned a lot about birds of prey from the excellent volunteers. Most spectacular was our national symbol, the bald eagle and how appropriate that it being Independence Day to learn more about this incredible animal.

The Hawkquest team was so good that the kids opted to go to their demonstration instead of the magic show. We got front row seats since we were 15 minutes early. The team put on a great show and both Tymber and Canyon got to be volunteers and take pictures with several of the birds. We learned some great trivia like the falcon is the fastest animal in the world and can reach speeds over 200mph when capturing prey! All in all it was very informative and fascinating.

After the show it was time for an early dinner--we ended up sitting in some comfy chairs by the big fireplace since the restaurant was booked. I taught the kids how to play shuffleboard. I think they really enjoyed knocking each others pucks off the board more than anything.

After dinner it was off to early bed since we had a big day of driving ahead as we continue westward. Destination for tomorrow is Grand Junction, Colorado. Broadmoor was a nice stop on our quest for the West Coast.
