With the late arrival from the previous night, the family appreciated the chance to sleep in this morning. The good news is that it shortened our day to Kansas City. The bad news is that we still had a long day in the car.

We awoke to gray skies but were able to get packed and moving fairly quickly, on the road by 9:30. Our route took us close to downtown St. Louis so we decided to take a detour and see the famed arch and Gateway to the West. How appropriate given our destination.

Rain sprinkled down as we got out of the car and walked along the grand Mississippi. I vividly remember driving across the Mississippi River in 1993 when all the flooding restricted us to just a few of the biggest bridges to cross. The high water markers were visible at about 15 feet above our heads from 1993.

After spending about 45 minutes walking around the waterfront we'd taken enough pictures and were eager to get back on the road. Our destination was a surprise to the kids--Great Wolf Lodge in Kansas City, KS. They had no idea!

Lunch was taken west of St Louis at a Panera Bread that was renamed "St Louis Bread Company." Not sure what was going on there but we had nice lunch and then resumed the drive.

After crossing Missouri we popped into Kansas and then drove around Kansas City. The Great Wolf Lodge is on the western side of the city in Kansas. Another state down!

Christina took a great video of the kids that is posted below on their reaction to finding out where we were staying. We had told them we couldn't find a hotel and had to keep driving (like what really happened the night before!)

None of us had ever stayed at a Great Wolf Lodge but we had heard they were great for families. Christina in her wisdom thought that this would be a nice break from the long driving days. The kids had a blast and lots of pictures are posted.

For those that don't know, GWL is a hotel with an indoor and outdoor water park. There are pools, water slides and all kinds of water activities for the kids, all indoors.. It was a fantastic stopover.
