While we had heard much about Tallinn from out friends Jukka (who is from Finland) and Suzanne Terho, who live in Barbados but have visited Tallinn, nothing could have prepared us for this place.  From the sea, the old city looks like a medieval port.  Spires and rooftops unchanged for centuries.

We arrived in port and made our way to the taxi stand.  As we had learned our lesson about walking to start off with, we got a taxi to take us to the Upper Town of the old city, which is known as Toompea.   We walked around the St. Nicholas church and the parliament buildings before heading down one of the narrow streets that connects the upper town to the lower part of the old city.

in the Village Square where the Old Town Hall sits there was a music festival going on, so we stopped and had a refreshing drink in one of the many sidewalk cafes.   We then walked around some more and decided to have lunch at The Golden Pig.   Medieval dishes where served, such as Pigs Ears (fried pieces of pigs ears.. not too bad..)   As a family we shared a meat lovers platter for 2.. it was enough to feed an army.. Chicken, pork, beef, ribs. plus potatoes and veggies.  we almost couldn't finish it, there was soooo much food.

after lunch we wondered around the small cobblestone streets of the city, winding our way down to one of the city gate towers.  We got lucky as we found a Maritime Museum housed inside this particular town, known as Paks Margareeta, or Fat Margaret.   http://www.meremuuseum.ee/?setlang=eng   the kids loved it.. The top floor held a Estonian Fishing history portion.  Elvis like this part.

We then wondered back at out of the old city and made our way back to the port.   The shops were in full swing and Elvis took the children back to the ship, while I wondered around and made a few souvenir purchases.

I highly recommend a visit to Tallinn.   really a lovely Old city..
