We should have known on arrival at Pnomh Pehn that we were in for a frustrating couple of days.
We got of the river boat which we had taken from Siem Reap and were immediately pressed by a seemingly endless stream of tuk tuk and moto drivers. One driver in particular fixed on us and wouldn't leave us alone no matter how many times we said no thanks. My legendary patience was about to give way.....you can only push me so far you know. I managed to shake him off with a few cutting words, eventually, and we escaped the throng. To congratulate ourselves we decided to sit and have a drink to catch our breath and decide where to head for. As luck would have it our persistant tuk tuk driver found us again and we gave in....he took us for ride in more ways than one.
Our guesthouse was one with a terrace on stilts over the lake, beautiful view...sounds lovely doesn't it. Lets just say this is the one time the Lonely Planet has let us down. We vowed to increase our standards in future!
We did the standard day tour of the gruesome sights. Starting with Tuol Sleng (the S21 museum), then onto the killing fields. It was all pretty horrendous and upsetting. It's incredible to think that something like that was allowed to happen in our lifetime.
