Today saw the last day of the second stage of our time in Europe. Tomorrow we'll be returning the rental car and beginning our week-long stay in Luminy, where Ben will be doing math and I'll be doing history -- with the odd trip into Marseille, I'm sure.

As for today, we didn't do much other than drive from Carcassonne to Aix-en-Provence. On the way we stopped in Aigues-Mortes and toured the ramparts of the old town, which was enjoyable but beastly hot under the Mediterranean sun. We'd hoped to also see the Pont du Gard, just north of Nimes, but were defeated by the 18 euro price of just parking the damn car. Granted, that price probably would have gotten us in to the various exhibits, et al. that have been set up around the bridge, but we weren't interested in any of that. We wanted to see it, hop out of the car for 15 minutes, take a bunch of pictures, then be on our merry way. If we'd arrived earlier in the day (it was 5 by the time we got there) we might have been willing to walk the 3 miles from the free parking lot or rent bikes or, better yet, a canoe in order to see the famed structure. Alas, it was too late.

Still, we had a good vacation, even if we may have over-done some things and not thought carefully enough about others. I think, though, that we're both satisfied and looking forward to a week of no driving and being able to settle in to a single room for a week.
