What I did
Today was our last day in Paris, if you don't count the few hours of tomorrow morning we'll be sticking around to get the rental car (*fingers crossed on that going well*). We only did two things today (beyond packing, laundry, cleaning up a bit in the hotel room): visiting the Catacombs and La Tour Jean Sans Peur.
Honestly, I'd expected to enjoy the Catacombs more than I did -- particularly for having stood in line in the hot sun for an hour and three quarters. It was neat, no doubt about it, but I was hoping for a bit more...grandeur. More interesting arrangements to the bones than arches and crosses. I'm not being entirely fair -- there were some more artful creations -- but largely it's a collection of bones. (yes, yes, I know, what did I expect?) Taking pictures was difficult because of the low lighting, but I tried and you can see the results in the photo section.
La Tour Jean Sans Peur, however, was an entirely different matter. I hadn't expected much from its exhibit on medieval wine and was pleasantly surprised by the wealth of information and detail provided. In fact, we first toured the tower itself and read about its history and that of the Duke of Burgundy (Jean Sans Peur). All the informational panels were translated into English in a little booklet for us, which was rather handy. The wine exhibit was very detailed -- covering the viticulture, making of barrels, various uses and by-products, social customs, and more besides. Sadly, there were no samples either to taste or buy.
For dinner we went next door to the restaurant Aux Arts et Sciences Reunis, having a surprisingly good meal in the process. A plus, as it looks like I may have an good adjunct position for the fall; we did a bit of advance celebrating.
