Unfortunately, both of us managed to pick up a nasty cold on the journey overseas, so we've been fairly out of it the past couple of days. The only bright side is that we're not suffering the same draining effects at the same time, making one of us capable of at least getting to the store or taking a walk while the other one rests back in the hotel. Monday was Ben's turn to go out, attending a talk and meeting with some fellow mathematicians. Today, after initially feeling not up to much, I decided to go for a walk, with the Archives as the intended goal, but realistically going only so far as I felt well enough to traverse.

As it turned out, in my 9-mile walk, I ended up going to the Archives and getting my pass card, though as I arrived at 4 in the afternoon, there wasn't truly time to do any work there. Instead, I ended up spending the afternoon trekking about trying to find various commemorative plaques, a list of which I'd found online. What I hadn't realized was that these were plaques honoring those fallen in WWII: plaques in front of schools, remembering the children taken on the trains; members of the resistance; those who gave aid to the Allies. Perhaps fitting, given that I've been reading The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. Nevertheless, I'd been hoping for a bit more variety (though I'm sure I wouldn't have been disappointed if they'd all been those who fell during the 100 Years War, so it's really a matter of where my interests lay). It's rather amazing to come across all these plaques, though, and see that the city has invested so much effort in commemorating the sacrifices - willingly and unwillingly - made.
