The Whitsunday islands are this gorgeous collection of islands off of the mid-east coast in Queensland. I sailed on "The Iceberg", a retired racing yacht for 3 days. Our crew was great, People from all over (including a few from Saskatchewan), and everyone was on the same vibe. The weather was schizophrenic, The rollers did me in on the first day and i got seasick, but we did get some key moments of sun so it was all good. And we actually got her goin pretty good with a few big gusts.
The gem of all the islands is considered to be "Whitehaven beach". Apparently it is supposed to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Just look at the pictures. The sand on most beaches consists of coral that has been sifted down over time on the rocks. Whitehaven's sand is made from refined Quartz. They say it's finer than flour, And it never gets hot like regular sand. It stays cool on your feet. Amazing.
The stars were crystal clear at night (I can finally pick out the Southern Cross - The constellation on the Australian flag).
We had to wear "stinger suits" snorkelling because it was jellyfish season. One guy, Devon (a pig farmer from Saskatchewan) got stung anyway... on his forehead. He came up yelling, "I've been stung, I've been stung" We were like, "No kidding, it's still sitting on your head." He dove back under.
When we got back I took my first kite-boarding lesson from the Captian of the Iceberg, D.C. And can I just tell you... I got wrecked! It was only about 20 knots of wind but I just got EATEN by the kite. Damn it's powerfull. I got dragged every which way up and down the beach. But it was so fun. Can't wait to do it again. : )
