Magnificant Buddhist caves, means Bright Spirit Temle.   Buddhism arrived in China along the Silk Road, and these caves are amongst the earliest significant Buddhist monuments in China.  Carved in sheer cliffs, the caves stretch about a mile in a 200 foot high gorge.  Isolated by the waters of the Liaujiaxia Reservoir on the Yellow River, the paintings and sculptures were saved from damage in the Cultural Revolution and remain in amazingly good condition for their age.  The caves were created about 1600 years ago with artists believed to have hung down the cliffs on ropes., and chisled out sculptures into the rock face.  One of the earliest caves dates to AD 420.
