Larry Start,

As we started there was mist around Monterey.  Highway 1 is fantastic, good wide road, plenty of "Turn Outs" to view the scenery.  This is not the narrow, winding road we were
warned of. Our first stop was Carmel By the Sea, a quaint, historic, seaside village.  Great Spanish feel and many artists capturing the local seascape down by the beach. There are many stops to view the superb vistas of sea, cliffs, rocky island and the occasional seal colony. Lunch is at Ragged Point.  We think we are stopping at a normal road stop, but find ourselves in a beautiful garden setting with food to match and humming birds to boot.

At Pismo Beach, I escape to explore the wines of Edna Valley, every bit like Australian wine regions.  The evening is spent capturing the seaside beauty that is Pismo Beach.  Paved, cliff walks, cocktails on the deck of the hotel watching the birds dive bomb the fish and finally, a great meal watching the sea change with the sunset not quite over the water.

Our drive to LA is partly on highway 1 with mist all along the way, just opening up enough to show us Santa Barbara beach (the seaside gardens are great).  Lunch was at the cutest Ventura Diner with the total 60s look and feel, including a juke box.

This is without a doubt a beautiful drive. It is not only the drop dead coastal scenery but the places you can stop at during the drive.  I think Larry says it all.  We loved every minute of this journey and would highly recommend it to anyone priovided they felt comfortable with the driving
