It is back in a hire car and out of San, Fran we head on big freeways some ten lanes wide with multiple storeys.  Larry negotiates them with the ease of an experienced American driver and I am less nervous than from L.A. We marvel at the state of American roads, now knowing that Roosevelt implemented them following the traditions of the great autobahns of Europe.  Melbourne could do with a visit to learn a bit more about roads and  public transport!!!!
We have a good days travel with a little bit of coastal scenery and pull up for the night in Monterey.  Our love of great Mexican food is hijacked by our worst meal on the trip.  Not to worry tomorrow is another day,

Easy drive to Monterey.  It has lakes and ocean, but some lousy Mexican food.

Hi Larry and Sue, I have really enjoyed catching up on your adventures. It also brought back some happy memories travelling with sister Jen in 1979 and Anne in 1984. I have enjoyed the photos as well as your perspectives.

Amelia now knows the family she will be staying with in Bordeaux and has fun communicating with Eva who is a few months younger than her and will be her "sister" and classmate during her almost 5 month stay from 27 August. I have had fun booking our accomodation. We will be in Europe 26 days. For 17 days from when we leave Milan for Napels on 30 September to when we depart Paris on 17th October we will be joined by Anne's Aunty Joan. I have had fun booking accomodation. Like just about everybody we have to work within some sort of budget, but it will be far more luxurious than our much longer travels in 1984. For example we won't be sharing a room with Joan (unlike with Grandma when she was with us). Also everywhere we will have an ensuite, and about half the time we will have kitchen facilities as well. The Dollar is at a one year low against the greenback, something you would also be aware of - but hey that is a rich man's problem isn't it staying at nice places then bitching about the exchange rate? We feel truly lucky to be able to make the trip.

This Saturday Ted is over for an early dinner then we are off to see the Dreamtime at the G match between the Tigers and the Bombers. I refuse to pay for a reserved seat, so if my general admission membership, plus Amelia's and one I have borrowed for Ted won't get us in (due to a sellout) so be it we will turn around and watch it over a couple of beers back at home.

Ted had a bad experience yesterday in his car. Someone rang his mobile and he answered saying "I can't talk now I am driving the car." Of course he got pulled up by a Copper and now has a $282 fine. Anne had the same experience several weeks ago, stuck in traffic after dropping off Amelia and friends to a city concert when she was checking her texts - kaching $282 fine and 3 demerit points.

The big local news here today is that Ford will be pulling out of all manufacturing in Australia from 2016. Although rumours have been floating around it is still a bit of a shock. To their credit they have given their staff 3 years notice, and sent them all home to have today and tomorrow off to dijest the news. Their head honcho said it was a very serious decision for them and came after losing 600 million over the last five years, and no prospect of a turn around with costs so much lower in Asia and Europe.

All the best for the remainder of your travels.

Ernie
