Hamilton Island 11-16 March 2010

We took the high speed ferry from Abel Point to Hamilton Island and spent the afternoon wandering around the Island, getting our bearings. The harbour was very pretty with many boats and some nice restaurants and cafes.

The resort is made up of various different types of accommodation, from bungalows to hotels, all with their own pools. We were in the Reef View Hotel and had a wonderful view of the coral reef from our 10th floor balcony.  In fact our room was lovely too, very spacious and comfortable and wonderful to be able to look out over the ever changing sea.

Unfortunately the weather was not so kind to us, due to a cyclone sitting just further out at sea, causing incredibly strong, howling winds and torrential rain.  We have never been up and down off a sun-bed as much as we have in the past 5 days, it seemed every time we got settled, down came the rain and we have never had so many soakings!

It was also very disappointing as all the boat trips to the Great Barrier Reef had been cancelled, so there was not very much to do.  We did hire a golf buggy for half a day, but found we had seen the whole island, had a coffee and done some shopping within 2 hours, so I guess you are getting the picture!

Anyhow, it did give us time to relax and recharge our batteries for the last leg of our journey.  Off tomorrow back to the mainland to get the overnight Sunlander train to Brisbane.
