Port Douglas – Hartleys Crocodile Farm 8th March 2010

Today we went to Hartleys Crocodile Farm which was brilliant! We saw so many crocodiles – it was fascinating but again incredibly hot!

We watched the crocs being fed and then had the chance to feed them ourselves with chicken heads hanging from the end of poles – which I have to shamefully admit, was great fun!  The size of some of these crocs was unbelievable, as was their camouflage against the water and vegetation – I think the guide was right when he said never swim anywhere but in a swimming pool in Queensland!!

That advice was particularly important when we were introduced to 'Ted’ who is an estimated 120 years old, 5.8 metres long and 900 kilos – phew!!

When passing the place where you had your photo taken with a croc, I thought I recognised the photographer and it turned it out that she was the same girl who had taken my photo with the koalas yesterday!  She remembered us and brought out the baby croc for us to look at!  We also went up the river on a boat where they fed the crocs, making them jump out of the water for the bait – these creatures sometimes never seem to move for ages, but when they do, they can’t half shift!  Eat your heart out Crocodile Dundee, we had an excellent morning!

We both fell in love with Port Douglas – especially the pool at Peppers which was just like a beach – but safer- fantastic!
