Freo 28/2/10 & 1/03/10

We set off early for Freo but after about 50k, we were diverted off the Highway because of bush fires. It was very scary as we could see all the black smoke belching out and the detour was inland which added an extra 100k on our journey!  The road was pretty bad towards the end as well with only one narrow lane for 2 way traffic – just as well not too many cars!

We stopped to fill up with petrol at the end of the detour and the man in the garage told us that the temperature was 48c yesterday in Geraldton and that the fires had been going all weekend and they had just brought in reinforcements!  We had been very lucky to escape this and that there had been a detour as there is often only one road, but for the rest of the journey we were quite nervous as we kept seeing smoke in the distance.

We stopped at a place called GinGin (how appropriate!)  for a coffee overlooking a very pretty park – delightful and we reached Freo just after 3pm.  After a cup of tea with Kairen and Laurie, we headed to the harbour to watch the Princess Elizabeth Cruise Ship leave.  Unfortunately, the hot weather and long distance got to us a bit and we headed back to the cool.

The next morning Kairen and Laurie took us to Shoal Haven, a pretty little bay with crystal  clear water.  After a walk and a paddle we headed back to the house to pack up and get ready for our onward travels the following day.

We had a fantastic time in Fremantle with Kairen and Laurie and they really looked after us so well – it just went far too quickly and we were very sad to leave.
