Travelling to and from Milford Sound – 24/25 January '10

Got up to the sound of heavy rain which was a bit of a downer as the Milford Sound is the entrance from the sea into a fjord.

By the time the coach picked us up the sun was shining, thank goodness!  There were 6 people on the coach and 2 of them were us but the driver was excellent and gave a brilliant commentary on the scenery and local history.  We had a number of photo stops and short walks and were stunned by the jaw-dropping beautiful views, enveloped in blue skies and snow on the mountain tops.

After a fantastic cruise, we returned to Milford and another great journey back with different photo stops and more excellent commentary by our driver Skip.  One story that amazed us both was the construction of the tunnel through the mountain.  The road leading up to this was being constructed on each side of the mountain at the same time. Before its completion, all the post, including wages, had to be delivered on foot, unfortunately though OVER THE TOP of the mountain!  To do this, the postman had to climb 450metres on one side and descend 1000 metres on the other which dropped him into a forest from where he had to find the workers.  This ascent and descent had to be done only on knotted ropes with no harness, no nothing.  Obviously some never made it which is hardly surprising because having gone one way, the poor devil then had to return – imagine this in the winter with all the snow and sub zero temperatures!

Must remember to relate this to our postman when we get back home!

Milford Sound was definitely the highlight of the NZ adventure with the most beautiful scenery we have ever seen and this time, we were unbelievably lucky with the weather, especially when they told  us that on average it rains 2 out of every 3 days there!!!!

Because of the fantastic photo opportunities we have separated the travelling to and from Milford Sound from the cruise itself which we will cover in a separate message.
