I got up early and set out to get some things accomplished. First stop was a Vodaphone shop to get a sim card for my phone. (My number while in Greece is 011 30 694 152 3713. If anyone can figure it out and send me a text msg, good luck! A nice girl in the shop helped me, with her limited English, explained a shop to go to where I can find toiletries and stuff. I spent most of the day wandering through Syndagama Square and around that area. I bought shampoo, toothbrush, soap, deoterant, shirt and underwear (but returned those today). So I waisted a bunch of money that I didn't need to , but how would I know that at the time right. I text msg'd Katie and Becki right away and told them what happend
I also spent a bit of time in an internet cafe checking my couchsurfing account. It's a worldwide online community of likeminded people, some people can host you when you come to their city, show you around, just have a drink,, etc. And you can do the same for travellers when they are in your city. I contacted a couple of girls here in Athens, and one of them made a post in the Athen's group msg board about my situation of lost baggage, not nice people, crappy hostel, etc. And I got several emails from other surfers who'd be happy to host me if i'd like. They had a meeting planned for that night so I decided i would go to that and meet some people and maybe find some one there that i could stay with. I went with one of my room mates, Austin , 22, from Minnisota. Coincidently, he had already arranged to be staying with one of the girls who I emailed! Everyone met at a metro station and then walked over to a nearby outside bar. About 20-30 people showed up, they all seemed like friends and new eachother already! I talked with only a couple of people, but Anastasia, who Austin is staying with, said she wouldn't mind if I did too. What a relief!!
So this would be my first couchsurfing experience and would save me the hassle of finding another place to stay.
We also brought our other roommate with us, Ben,24, from Canada. We left the meeting early and decided we should have a nice dinner. It was 1 am and we still hadn't eaten dinner, but no worries, all the restaurants are still open because that's how the Greeks do it! We got dragged into a place, some resturants have someone standing outside trying to talk people into coming in and it worked on us suckers
I didn't do too much today. Walked around the streets in a shopping area. I'm a little sick and was on my way to buy some tissues and beggar lady happen to be selling packs of tissues so I bought them from her cuz I was going to go buy them anyway. There are beggars here just as anywhere but a few were in really bad shape. I saw a lady with 1 arm, another with no legs, a kid with half his face burned and a droopy eye, and a man slap his daughter and yell at her in Greek after I didn't give them any money. Hopefully I wasn't the cause of that incident.
I also didn't realize just how much smoking really is part of Greek life. People smoke everywhere and all the time. It's really strange seeing that and always having smoke in your face
The only think I could really tick off my list for today is the National Archeology Museum. I might not be exadurating too much when I say I was bored to pieces but I forced myself to have a look and read about some of the displays because after all these artifacts are thousands of years old and important finds in for Greek history and Archeology. It was mostly pottery, iron works, figurines, jewelry, marble statues, grave markers... And I'm not interested a pot or a pair of earings from 5,000 years ago. I'm much more interested in the person who the pot or earings belonged to, I want to know who he /she was, where they lived, what did they eat, what were their lives like ? etc etc.....
I was supose to go to see the Acropolis this evening after the hords of tourists die down, but I don't think Im going to have the time so I will have to save that for tommorow with all the tourists and the evil sun beating down on me !! I've been consistantly sweating for 2 days now! haha it's ok once the sun goes down but geeze if it's this bad here I can only imagine what it's going to be like in Thailand. I need to buy more shorts.
Austin and I met up with Anastasia at 3 today and we went together to find her apartment. It's very nice with a good view and cool balcony. The disaster of the day occured when Austin realized he didn't have his wallet. It must have fallen out of his pocket when he paid for his metro ticket or someone nicked it. He stayed home trying to sort out calling the back, his parents and all that... and I walked about 3 miles to get to this internet place. I best be going before it gets dark and I cant' find my way !!
I talked to a travel agent today and have booked a ferry to the Island of Crete. It leaves at 9pm tommorow night and arrives at 6am. I don't know what the internet situation will be like over there but will try my best !
