The highlight of the bus journey to the border was the game of Bingo, which all the passengers played for a chance to win a free return ticket to Areuipqa! It really tested my knowledge of numbers in Spanish. I was sitting next to this old lady (Elizabeth) who wouldnīt stop singing along to all the Peruvian songs being played and shouting out to everyone how many numbers 'the English girl' had left on her Bingo card - she got very exctied when I only had one left, but I was pipped to the post by some guy who then decided to get up and sing an impromptu song to everyone over the mike!
It turned out Elizabeth was headed for Santiago too, so we paired up to find a hotel when we got to Tacna (at the border).
Early on Thursday morning we got a collectivo across the border to Arica (in Chile) only to discover there were no buses to Santiago until Friday night! I couldnīt wait until then, as it was a 30hr journey and my flight to Auckland was on Saturday! So I said goodbye to Elizabeth and got a collectivo to Arica airport, where the nice LanChile man found me a seat on a plane bound for Santiago leaving in 30 minutes! Hooray! I really didnīt want to spend any more time in Arica...
