For our final day on Flores, we decided to explore the island under our own steam. Of course there's far too much to do in a day but we set a course for Cunca Rami, a waterfall about 35km east of Labuan Bajo, aboard a rented moped.

The directions we were given were vague to say the least, but we assumed from the blasé response to our request for a map that it would be a piece of cake. A piece of cake it was! We followed relatively good road for a couple of hours climbing steadily higher. Every now and again we were flagged down by friendly locals who wanted to chat so we were soon able to confirm that we were on the right track. When we reached a small village, we hired a guide who escorted us through the forest and over the rice paddies. A steep incline and wet mud underfoot lead to several slips in the mud and pretty soon Steve and I whipped off our flipflops to trek barefoot. I was a bit concerned about the leeches in the rice paddies but amazingly we made it through unscathed.

The waterfall was beautiful, as you can see for yourselves. I was a bit frightened of what might be lurking in the deep but Steve was much braver than me and hopped into water before I'd finished my leech check!
