Flag of Ireland  , County Kerry,
Friday, March 30, 2012

We left very early this morning...again!! But oh, so worth the early alarm. Just out of Killarney we stopped briefly to see some ogham stones. Ogham is sometimes called the "Celtic Tree Alphabet", based on a high medieval tradition ascribing names of trees to the individual letters. The bulk of Ogham stones are in the south of Ireland, in Counties KerryCork and Waterford.    In addition, we stopped for some misty photos at Killeen Golf Course, home of the Irish Open.

The landscape today was much like the California north coast--and different in many ways, too. The drive is a 110-mile loop which follows the coast part of the way and then moves inland. The vistas are a combination of peat bogs, sheep farms, houses, resorts, stone wall croppings, bright yellow gorse blooms, lakes, mountains, valleys, and great vistas of the Atlantic Ocean.

This being lambing season in Ireland, there were 100s of little lambs around every corner.  They are adorable!

In Waterville, a little resort town along the shore, we stopped to view a statue of Charlie Chaplin who starred in many silent movies filmed in the area.

We stopped at one of many peat bogs for a closer look--very interesting landscape.  A lunch stop at a popular remote seaside restaurant offered not only a great meal but exraordinary views of the coastline....and up-close photo ops of the sheep.

Added a few new birds to my list--I'm up to 16 species.  Brought an Ireland bird guide given to me over 15 years ago by Renee.  Brought it along to have her with me.  She LOVED Ireland and I do, too!

Janice and I had fish and chips tonight (very good) and have done our chores--she wrote in her journal and reorganized her bags for early pickup and I...well, I have completed tonights posting!

More tomorrow--Love, Janice and Sue

Great pics.
Weren't you surprised by the brightly painted buildings. To me, it looked more like the Med that my expectation of what an Irish village would look like.
