Awoke from possible nightmarish scenario on the side of a cliff to discover Pigeon Point is a beautiful hostel and light house right on the coast.  Lovely views all around and a very comfortable stay.

We pushed on to Monterey where everything takes something of a fishy feel.  It's a small-ish, popular fishing resort a few hours drive south.  It's very tourist orientated and pushes it's prices up accordingly, and as such we decided not to opt for the aquarium.

A few miles out of town there is a wonderful "17 mile drive", which takes you in a loop around some stunning scenery, coastal golf courses and woodland.  $9 fare to drive the road, it was well worth it, with some gorgeous views in hot sunshine, but the best was yet to come.

Set off towards Big Sur, an area of unspoilt natural coastal beauty, and it certainly was that.  Some quite simply outstanding views out over the Pacific from a winding and twisting road, right on the dramatic cliff edge.  It is one of the worlds most spectacular drives, and it certainly lives up to this expectation.

As the sun set, we pulled into the collection of inns, motels and camp grounds that calls itself Big Sur.  With no vacancy anywhere, our options were becoming limited, until we decided to sleep in the Mustang.  However a very boozy night out with the locals soon revealed friends, and we were welcome to sleep on local couches.  A wonderful town, with more than it's fair share of characters, it's safe to say I will be back this way again.
