Wow, what a great day!!
It started with an action packed visit to Parliament House. Mrs D'Ath and Mr Hinchcliffe were waiting out the front to greet us. Not so long ago, they were at 'our place' but today we had the opportunity to visit 'their place'!!
We were taken on a tour to both the House of Representatives and the Senate and heard some interesting facts that we weren't already aware of - not the least of these was to see the only red Exit sign in existence in Australia, over the doors of the Senate!! Apparently, the Senators of the time didn't want to be reminded of the House of Representatives each time they left the room!!
Our visit to the National Library was just as wonderful. We were taken to the underground floors where every newspaper since 1892 has been stored! The children watched the electronic shelving and saw many, many library books, magazines etc. We even visited 'yesteryear' and saw the 'tube system' in action as our book order was 'sucked' into the system, to travel to another floor! We saw so many intriguing artefacts; the 'Treasures Gallery' even had the journal that had been written by Captain James Cook on his voyage to finish mapping the Great Southern Land!! Perhaps the thing that the children will remember most was that the Library possesses a book bound with human skin!!! Eewwww!!!
The day concluded with our visit to Government House, the official residence of the Governor-General, Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce. The children were obviously in awe of it's elegance - the beautiful sitting room, the dining room complete with its 24-carat gold rimmed place setting. However, much to their disbelief, they learnt that the Governor-General and her husband live in a three-room apartment on the second of the three floors of this grand house!
Early to bed and early to rise...Off to the snow tomorrow!
