Where I stayed
Your Place, Hat Chaweng

After our ever-so-ordinary time at Koh Pha Nang, we were determined to find some fun on Koh Samui and, after managing to get a nice bungalow at Your Place at Hat Chaweng for 700 baht per night (I still felt this was expensive), we set out to find it.

How lovely to have other people around us, a really friendly staff (especially one waitress who took a shine to me and shook my hand every time she saw me), the water lapping at our table at mealtimes, music, fun and, it has to be said, lots of tourists! Thank goodness it was low season.

A definite aroma of gunja in the air as well – I woke in the middle of one night to the smell coming from under our room where some of the employees slept in hammocks.

We didn't explore the island at all but had a really relaxing beachy holiday for 4 days, with seafood barbecues on the beach, cocktails in the deck chairs at the Bob Marley bar with our toes in the water, and a continuous backing track of Thai Muk-Muk and elevator music and calls for massage.  Matt would gladly have partied hearty if he had hooked up with a couple of other drinkers but, believe it or not, I wasn’t up for it.

TIDBITS

I knew we were in the right place when the taxi driver didn’t desert us in the rain but hung around to help us find accommodation we were happy with, without increasing his agreed-upon price.  On the other hand, taxis on Koh Samui are really expensive – it seems it costs you 300 baht to go the shortest distance.

The local airport is great – really well laid out with comfy chairs, free internet, a courtesy food and coffee bar and newspapers all in a tropical setting.
