With our plane leaving Birmingham at 6.00am, it was rather touch and go as to whether we would actually make the flight. Danny was somewhat dubious as to Vicky's style of packing; in other words, chill with some red wine for the evening and then shove everything into the bag at the last minute. Danny, on the other hand, spent a significant amount of time arranging all his belongings into carefully designated piles. The fact that these were then thrown in to the general melee of our joint rucksack, appeared to be besides the point.

However we eventually found ourselves checking in, where we were informed by an extremely unimpressed stewardess that we were 4kg overweight. A hasty re-arrangement ensued, which resulted in several items of Vicky's clothing strewn over the airport floor. With each shoe (and flipper) we removed, the weight decreased and eventually the stewardess had had enough and allowed us on with only one extra kg.

We arrived unscathed in Corfu (perhaps due to the fact that we had to sit separately). The hotel had clearly been a luxury one its day, which was sometime in the early 1970's. However, the retro-feel added a definite sense of escapism, almost as if we had stepped back in time and onto the set of 'Knight Rider', complete with extras styling themselves in leather and flares. However, it had a pool and private beach, as well as, dangerously, Corfu's only Casino.

Having had a total of two hours sleep, we collapsed into bed and just about managed to stumble down in time for dinner. As we were on a half-board package deal, we were rather expecting burger and chips every night, but were pleasantly surprised to find fish and a rather intriguing aubergine concoction in a 'traditional' tomato sauce.

The next day we were still fairly shattered, although we did make it down for breakfast - albeit whilst the waiters were busy packing everything away. We decided that as the sun had decided to make a guest appearance, we would spend the next day on the beach.

Unfortunately, Danny managed to cause severe injury to his back on the first day (don't worry Danny, it happens as you get older). Vicky initially ignored him as she thought he was joking, but when she realised that he actually couldn't move, she decided she has better call a Doctor. Being a Sunday, she fortunately was prepared to come out to us. Despite all his carefully organised piles, he didn't have travel insurance, but fortunately the Doctor was prepared to put Vicky's name on the documentation. Doctor turned out to be more of young Greek medical assistant than Doctor and Danny was rather upset that she didn't feel the need to prod or massage his back. However, she did prescribe some industrial painkillers; hence Vicky's first experience of Kerkya Town was in fact a visit to the pharmacy. Driving with her was rather hairy and even Vicky, with all of her natural navigation skills, worked out that there was a one way system, so all you had to do was point in the same continuous direction. Quite how she managed to get lost was something of a mystery. Arrived outside the pharmacy, amid the hooting of horns from other drivers and Vicky hopped out. Once she arrived at the pharmacy, Vicky realised that the doctor had forgotten to give her the prescription, which meant another phone call to get her to bring it back. Eventually managed to find a taxi back, with painkillers which immediately did the trick. Danny was rather spaced out for the remainder of the day, which perhaps explains why you can't get hold of them in England....
