Had a really restless night last night. Kept waking up and having really weird dreams - none of which I can remember. Anyway got up at 8.30 as this was our last day in Auckland and we had to check out of the hostel. Lisa called over at 10 and we headed to the Sky Tower. I was gonna do the jump from the top but I was freaking out and havng secret shepherds pie in the pants moments. Eventually I plucked up the courage to so it, so I got suited and harnessed up and got the lift to the top. I was absolutely bricking it. Its 194m high which is the tallest building in the southern hemisphere and the highest jump of its kind in the world. Standing at the edge just before jumping and looking at the tiny figures of Steve, Fintan, Lisa and Chloe on the platform 194 metres below, I panicked and seriously thought about turning back but I just took a few deep breaths, closed my eyes and jumped. They leave you hanging for a while in front of the observation deck where all the tourists were taking photos of me and then they let you drop. Oh my God it was some feeling just freefalling towards the ground. It was all over so fast. I couldn't stop shaking for about 30 mins afterwards. I wasn't feeling too well before the jump but after I was on a high for the day.
After saying our goodbyes to Lis we went and got our car and after a few wrong turns finally got out on the highway south and were headed towards The Whaitomo caves. The caves were fantastic. At first there like any other cave with the staligtites and staligmites but then you get on a boat on an underground river and its pitch black and on the ceiling are thousands of glow worms. It was like looking up at the stars. Amazing!!
From there I took to the wheel of the car and we headed further south to Whakapappa Village. On the way I got caught speeding. 76kph in a 50kph zone. Bummer!! Got smacked with a $120 fine. First day on the road. Just my luck eh!! Anyway we got toWhakapappa in one piece and booked into a hostel. Apparently our hostel is the highest hotel in New Zealand at 1250 metres and its bloody freezing here too. We had dinner and basically did nothing for the rest of the night.
