Hey All

So this is my second entry on my blog and also my first week spent at a hostel as my backpacking travels actually begin. Im staying at a hostel called 'Dougies' which is just on the outskirts of Port Douglas town.

We got picked up from Cairns Airport by the Dougies Coach which was a brightly coloured mini bus. Was about a 40 minute journey to the hostel which was one long road which followed right along the coast and through the edge of the rainforest. The hostel itself is awesome, it has a swimming pool, hammocks, a few TV's with a shed load of channels to keep us busy in the day and best of all there is a bar with cheap drinks!!! Only thing better than having a cheap bar is having our room literally outside the bar so we can roll into bed after a heavy session!

We managed to get a 4 bed dorm and we immediately hit it off with our two room mates Mike from Devon and Francis from Canada. Mike was only there 2 days and hitchhiked up north into the rainforest so me jamie and Francis have been hanging out all week. I have discovered the amazing use of ear plugs to help me sleep as certain people snore (no names mentioned). Also helps as the bar dont close till midnight so when taking an early night the music is banging as we are within 10 foot of the bar.

Its true what they say about backpackers, they are ALL friendly and almost everyone says hi to you or sits and chat with you which is great! Theres people from all over the world here. Ive spoken to people from america, canada, england, austrlia, germany, belgium, sweden and italy so far!

Its been a pretty chillaxed week with us mainly chilling out on the beach and soaking up the sun which is around 24-27 degrees each day. Luckily for us its winter here which means that the sea is safe to swim in as the sea is usually infested with Box Jellyfish (stingers) and even known for salt water crocs to be near by!

On Wednesday me Jamie and Francis booked up a day tour which was a Safari in a 4WD Land Cruiser which we shared with an austrlian couple and we were guided for the day by a guy called Nick who has to be the most intelligent guy we had ever met! He was literally a fountain of knowledge. Throughout the day we did several things such as go on a walk through the Daintree Rainforest which was just amazing. After this we headed to Cape Tribulation which was where the James Cook first landed on shore in australia and we chilled out for a while and had morning tea on the beach. I even sawe my first HUGE spider here and was brave enough to get within 5 foot of the thing. I wasnt brave enough to get so close to take a picture so got Francis to do this and when u see the pic, thats not my hand behind it, i aint that brave! Anyways we then went to an ice cream factory quickly to try some ice cream made from fruits from the rainforest which was pretty cool. After this we then headed down for a river cruise down the Daintree river. We were hoping to catch loads of crocs but unfortunately only saw the one on this occasion which kinda sucked as the guy had seen earlier in the day a croc over 20 feet long! We were even told some sad stories of near by where only 3 or 4 months ago a 5 year old girl was pulled from a boat (from a different company) by a croc more than 20 feet! so its really shows how dangerous the crocs can be. Anyway enough of the sad stuff, After this we finally headed down to Mossman Gorge which looked absloutely breathtaking. There were loads of people swimming in the clear gorge waters and it looked awesome. Im hoping i can persuade the guys to head there tomorrow on our last day in Port Douglas and go for a swim there.

One of the down falls of having a bar in the hostel is the feel that u need to drink in it every day, Apparently from what people say, the Queensland state is full of binge drinking alcoholics (but the nice kind) which we encountered the previous day with a drunk aboriginal man stumbling across the road looking a bit wasted haha. Anyways last night (friday night) me Jamie and Francis hit the booze and got absoloutely plastered. We ended up playing darts with 2 american girls but by this stage i was pretty gone to be honest and could barely hold the bloody dart let alone throw it. I somehow even started a tab which was dangerous! That night was messy and i was worried about falling out of my top bunk bed and apparently chatting out of my backside to Francis and Jamie about going skydiving! Something i am still considering...

Its been a pretty chilled out but amazing week here. Me Jamie and our new friend Francis have had some laughs and even spent an evening somehow talking about killer Oysters or something? Ive also been called a douche bag about a thousand times by Francis! I think the staff got a bit worried about him when he asked the reception where he could buy a big hunting knife and when the asked 'What are you hunting?' he simply replied 'Oh nothing really' and they gave him some dodgy look as if they thought he was gunna go on a rampage through the hostel!

On a downside this week i havent been too well. It took me two weeks to realise i felt like my nose was pounding and turns out i got blocked sinuses or something so i been on stuff the pharmacist gave me this week, niceeeeeee. Hoping it will clear up in next week as it doing my nut in.

Anyways ive been doing what i do best and rambling on again as usual. Nothing else much to report at the moment i think. Heading to Cairns Monday morning with Jay and Francis and Staying at NJoy! hostel for the week. Gunna try and get a reef cruise and still contemplating the whole skydiving thing :s

One last thing worth noting is that i might be changing my route completely covering the northern territory and dowing the west cast first then flying from perth to adelaide and travelling up east coast

More details, photos and gossip to follow!
