Aigues-Mortes sort of means "dead waters."
Founded by Louis the 9th for a port on the Mediterranean, from here sailed 1500 ships in 1248 for the 7th Crusade, full of awesome Christians bent on killing and raping all the Muslims they could, while stealing and pillaging with the overall mission of retaking Jerusalem and the rest of the "holy land" (yet again) because, of course, as the sign says in one of my pictures, "Dieu le veut" (God wants it). Right, of course he does...
