Saturday 24th June
Short bus journey from Brisbane and i arrive in Noosa heads, it is a beach resort where a lot of rich australians go on holiday, you can tell by some of the nice properties there. There are lots of backpackers too, who are exiled to the outskirts of the town which means a short bus ride to the beach! Spend the afternoon on the beach and catch up with fellow traveller Toby from Jersey who i met in Byron Bay, we arranged to meet up here as he by-passed Brisbane. As its saturday night we decide to go out for a night on the town, the ozzie locals are really friendly and we have some good banter about cricket, football etc end up in an ozzie club which was quite an experience as we must have been the only english in there so stuck out like a sore thumb, have a good night though, get introduced to an ozzie drink called Jager-bombs, just don't ask!
Sunday 25th June
Me and 'Bergerac' head down to the beach for the day then back to bed before the England - Ecuador game tonight. Get up for the game and struggle to stay awake, not exactly impressive football but get the result we need!
Monday 26th June
Part company with Toby again until Friday as we have both booked Fraser Island safari's but with different tour operators, we will meet up again on friday further north at Airlie Beach. Arrive at Rainbow Beach which is the base from which we will be visiting Fraser Island. Meet my safari group of 9, 2 Dutch, 1 Candian, An Irish Guy i met in Noosa (keep seeing the same people along the east coast), a Welsh Guy and 4 English, one of whom is an Essex boy too! First we have to go buy enough food for the 3 days we will be camping on Fraser Island, After that an early night before we set off tomorrow in our 4x4 Land Rover!
Tuesday 27th June
We all head off to Fraser Island, we take it in turns to drive the 4x4, i get it bogged in sand once but get the hang of it after a while, is pretty cool driving along a beach with the sea on your right, more scenic than the M1 anyway! Have to watch out for creeks though, i take one a little too fast, don't think the Dutch were too impressed with that, still no harm done! We visit a ship wreck then take in a viewing point from which you can see Whales, Dolphins and Sharks in the water, don't see Whales but see a Dolphin and a Shark. (by the way you cant swim in the sea here due to sharks, jelly fish etc) Set up camp in the evening which really isn't me but the others seem to know how to put up a tent! Rains in the evening so i really dont fancy sleeping in the tent so me and the irish guy decide it is warmer and drier in the back of the 4x4, i'm really not a camping person!
Wednesday 28th June
Take in a couple of lakes today which you can drink the water from, the water is very clear though i pass up the chance to sample the water! Feeling bit tired after sleeping in the back of the 4x4 on a hard bench but at least i didnt get wet like the others! Set up camp again and another night in the back of the 4x4.
Thursday 29th June
See a couple more lakes today but am glad to be heading back to mainland where i can sleep in an actual bed, have also been lucky that we didnt get any problem from Dingo's, these are a crossed between fox and a dog and they hunt in packs for food and often pester campers, saw a couple from the car but luckily they left our camp alone! All that camping has given me a cold, so when i get back to mainland got to stock up on the medicines, going sailing for 3 days on sunday so need to get better for then! i'm never going camping again, was fun but a one off!
Friday 30th June
Ckecked out of Rainbow Beach and now contemplating the 18 hour overnight bus journey to get up to Airlie Beach where i will be doing my sailing trip around the Whitsunday Islands. I leave at 3 this afternoon and arrive 9am on saturday, then sail on sunday.
