On Friday 22nd, Johana and I headed for my hometown Elverum in Norway, to celebrate a few days of Christmas with family and friends. It was Johana's first time in Norway, so I was keen on showing her the ridiculous amount of snow and insanely freezing temperatures we have to deal with up here in 6055′N 1142′E land. Having spent all winters until my 28th birthday (when I moved to the tropical UK) up in these latitudes, I can promise you that I have never spent a single Christmas without plenty of snow as well as polar nippy temperatures usually oscillating between -10 and -30 degrees Celsius (the record being close to -45 back when I was 10 or so).

My father picked us up at the airport and I immediately noticed the relatively warm weather. A couple of plus degrees I would guess. There was also no snow, although that is not unusual for the airport area, as it is somehow close to the sea and hence got more of a coastal climate (Vidar Theisen correct me if I'm wrong here). Surely there will be plenty of snow when we hit Elverum a couple of hours further north. Rolling into my "cosmopolitan pueblo" 90 minutes later and well into the night, the thermometer showed -7 degrees. But where was the snow? I could not believe it, no snow whatsofu%#ingever. From my childhood I remember snow falling regularly around my birthday on October 11th. Then as I got older, usually a bit later. Sometimes in November or early December. But here we were on the 22nd of December 2006 and there was not a trace of snow anywhere. I could see the disappointment in my eyes (Johana surely couldn't care less, let us get inside it's bloody freezing...).

The next few days we spent relaxing, eating (Moose comes to mind), sleeping, visiting friends, partying, idling and of course waiting for the snow. We also went to Jesper's (my Nephew) christening on December 25th. In the end, the cold weather skipped visiting this Christmas and so did the snow, so we returned to Madrid on the 27th without me having been able to prove that all Norwegians are born with skis on their feet...
