Leaving our firm French friends in Dubrovnik was strange. Having spent the whole tour of Hrvatska with the duo, we had almost forgotten what it was like to have the burden of heavy bags upon our backs. We quickly remembered.

We have forbidden ourselves the use of any public transport during this
trip: no buses, no taxis, no trains... nothing except good old shanks'
pony - we ride him a lot - or a motor vehicle that does not belong to
us. Due to this rule, we had to walk out of the centre of Dubrovnilk, climbing the 2km pathway to the southbound road towards Montenegro. Dripping with sweat and fully reminded of the joys of rucksacks, we were elated to finally reach the summit, and find two quick lifts to take us to within 5kms of the border.

The next sequence of events was set in motion by the timely bowel movements of my companion, Mr. Jackson. Will decided that he could not wait any longer; nor would a bush suffice for this particular type of satisfaction. Thus, he decided to cheekily knock on the doors of the local villagers until he found a host welcoming enough to offer a weary traveller a toilet.

Not only did the wonderful Katica and her warm-hearted family allow Will and I to use their facilities to our hearts' content; they also provided us with an evening feast, the chance to play on their beautiful piano, and a bed for the night. If you don't ask, you don't receive.

The next day we left for Montenegro, stayed there a day with some Serbian Christians that had given us a lift over the border, before making tracks for Macedonia the following day. Four lifts in quick succession landed us in Podgorica - still in Montenegro, but at least aiming in the right direction - before a miraculous 9-hour lift by two Macedonian guys took us all the way across the Montenegran mountains, through Kosovo, and into Skopje at 1.30am the next morning.
