On this day, we had planned to go to the underground ancient temples of Hypogium. But, however, since it is so popular, we were told by the tourism office that we had to book, and book at least ten days in advance. I was pissed off.

However on the theme of going udnerground, we decided to head for Rabat to take a look, and head for the catacombs of St Paul and St Agatha. But first, we headed for Dingli Cliffs, the highest point on the rock of Malta.

Dingli Cliffs were a little dissapointing, I guess I was expecting something like the Tassie Peninsula. However it was good to get out an go for a decent walk, and see a few points of interest on the way. We hopped off in some unknown place somewhere near the town of Dingli, and headed for the cliffs. But damn it was hot. The view was great over Fiflia Island, Mary Magdalene's Chapel, along with other ruins were interesting along the way. It was kind of fun just walking around in the middle of nowhere in the stinking heat. The countryside is truly strange. Cacti, rock, and sandstone being the dominant features. We trudged on back to Dingli, which is a bit of backwater town, with not much of interest, and infrequent buses.

After Dingli, we hopped off in Rabat. Here we headed to the centre of town, St Paul's Church (St Paul is really popular in Malta!). We explored the streets and made our way to St Paul's Catcacombs, followed by St Agatha's Catacombs.  These catacombs are basically underground tombs carved out of the rock underground. Both were really impressive, in their own way. I think they are a very under-rated thing to do in Malta. St Agatha's has beautiful frescoe paintings in a small chapel chamber. It was also quite creepy at times.

So in the end, although we did not make it to Hypogeum, we still had an nice adventurous day, with some deep history at the catacombs.
