Was sat outside the front of the house this morning reading when  I heared a strange noise from just along the road.  We get all sorts of vehicles and home made contraptions coming along but I had never heared this one before.  A huge cloud of smoke was drifitng ahead of it and I thought that it must be some old banger someone had pieced together but no - it was the mossie killers.
This is not a particularly hot spot for mossies and there is no-one in the village to the best of my knowledge who has had malaria but there are certainly more than our fair share of mossies around, particularly in the evenings.  The mossies in Thailand are largely resistant to the old prevention tablets that used to be issued to travellers and as I dont want to be taking medication like this for the length of time that I am here I dont take any precautions, except cover up after dark and keep bedroom clear for sleeping.
Jai's father used to be the village malaria doctor years ago before there was much medicine could do.  He would be supplied with medication of some sort on a regular basis and if anyone suspected they had succumbed they would visit him for what little help he could offer.  There used to be a metalplaque on the front of Jai's mother's old house identifying the resident as a 'medicine man'.  I suggested to Jai that it would be nice to keep this when the old was pulled down and either put it back up on the new house for old times sake or simply to keep it around the house somewhere.  There cant be too many of these around any more and one day could be quite collectible.  When the house was down and I asked about the plaque Jai's mum had sold it the scrap metal man for about 20p.  Not too much sentimentality here !!!
Anyway, my mystery noise.  As the smoke cleared a little I could make out a man with some sort of blower strapped to his back walking around the houses jetting clouds of smoke everywhere to kill off all the mossies who are particularly prevalent at this time of year.  Scarily first thoughts made it look like a flamethrower and as he turned off the smoke from time to time flames did leap out the end of the contraption.  As he approached I closed the two front doors but was told to open them again for the smoke to go inside the house as well.  It stank, largely of petroleum, and I am not sure exactly what was in the mixture.
Sitting outside the house in the evening, however, there seemed to be just as many mossies around as there had been previously.  I dont know if it was just my imagination but they appeared to be biting more as well.  Perhaps they were fortified by the smoke or simply just fighting back !!
