Where I stayed
From Phuket, we took a minbus ride to the pier in Phuket. This ride was not for the faint of heart, as the driver was weaving in and out of oncoming traffic, avoiding scooters, trust me when I say that Steve and I were happy to get to the pier and out of that van! We boarded the crowded ferry bound for Phi Phi, and found a row of broken seats at the back of the ferry's below-deck seating. It smelled like a foot and we were glad the ride was only an hour and a half or so. We pulled in the busy pier on Koh Phi Phi and it was exactly as it appears in pictures or on postcards. CRYSTAL clear blue water, colourful longtail boats, and sweltering temperatures. Phi Phi is a pedestrian island only (no cars and scooters, which was a welcome change) so we walked through the windy little streets to get to our hotel with our bags in a metal mule cart pushed by our hotel guide. Along the walk there, we chatted with some other Canadians we had identified by their identical Mountain Equipment packs they had to mine and Steve's (same colour and all). We arrived at our bungalow and were pleasantly surprised as the accomodations were great (swimming pool and all) and our own personal cat buddy who slept under the chair on our porch. We had a late lunch and decided within and hour of being in Phi Phi that we definitely wanted to stay an extra night beyond what we had originally booked, since we both knew we would have such a great time there. The entire island was made up of young people, aged 30 and under and I'd have to say that even we seemed to be on the older end of the age spectrum. Ended up meeting two older guys at lunch who lived in The Junction/Bloor West back at home and had a lot of laughs with them, they also gave us a few great tips about the island since they had been there for at least a few days.
We ended up meeting Evan and Katie later on in our hotel pool, two friends traveling together from New York and Boston, respectively and formed an instant friendship with them. We ended up having dinner with them, along with Peter and Keisha from Sydney, Australia, whom Katie and Evan had met while staying in Phuket. We ended up our evening at the beach rave complete with fire throwers, body paint and one too many buckets of vodka and Red Bull... its true what they say about the body paint, it really does not come out of your clothes :( A wild party indeed and something to see, thats for sure.
The next day, after realizing I had come home with two left sandals, one of which was mine and the other was Peter's, we just relaxed on the beach and walked around the island a bit more. The following day, the group of us arranged a half day snorkelling and beach trip to Koh Phi Phi Le, the smaller of the Phi Phi islands, that does not have any accomodation on it, and is only accessible by boat. Along with a crew of rowdy English soccer hooligans, we toured around the absolutely breathtaking bays, snorkelled and spotted some beautiful fish and visited Maya Bay, where much of the movie "The Beach" was filmed. Absolutely the most stunning beach we have ever seen, hands down.
The following day, we climbed about half and hour to the top of the beautiful view points at the top of the island, that really give you a vantage point of the entire island from above. Tough climbs for sure, but it was totally worth it for the views and photo ops. We were so sad to say goodbye to Katie and Evan, who were moving on to Vietnam, and Peter and Keisha who were heading back to Sydney but hope to keep in touch with them along their travels. Overall, an absolutely fabulous time, tons of good food, maybe one too many Thai Pancakes smothered in Nutella, peanut butter and banana, one lost flip flop, our adventure continues on to relax in Koh Samui for a few days before heading to Koh Phagnan for the Full Moon Party and all sorts of other shenanigans.
