Wow what an experience today. Went out on a personalised tour of Bali, the first thing that hits you is the traffic mayhem, there are just so many scooters and mostly being ridden by youngsters without crash helmets or by two or three people on one scooter and even carrying babies or stacked high with goods for sale.

The Highway Code seems to be if there is a gap and you can make it – go for it. If do don't think you’ll make it – go for it anyway. We were being overtaken, undertaken both at the same time. Absolute madness but we survived.

The cultural experience saw us looking around a typical Balinese house and on to visit a temple. That’s where I had to wear the skirt to cover my legs. We passed some rice plantations on the way too. The countryside here is very green and lush.

We went to a busy market in Ubud, Gemma I got a photo for you of your Mum in a market. I am finding the money here very confusing; if you’re ever visiting I would recommend bringing US dollars and definitely a calculator. The exchange rate for the Rupiah to the pound is 140000. So it is very easy to think you spending 1 but you are actually spending 10. They also let you pay partly in Rupiah and partly in Dollars which just makes working out what you are spending impossible.

We rounded off the afternoon in spectacular fashion with a ride on a Sumatran elephant, we were both planning to go for the ride but Claire got jelly legs at the last minute. She did manage to sit on for a photo though.

The ride was fantastic, I’ll try and upload the video. I even got to ride on my own sitting on the elephants neck. Didn’t take me long to get to know how to work the controls, your legs are behind his ears and you push forward on the opposite ear to the way you want him to go. Such an experience, a bit of a wobbly ride and quite high too especially at the end when he went into a water pool, balanced on some concrete podiums and then sat down with me still clinging on to his neck. A must do for anyone visiting Bali.

Back to the hotel for some well deserved cool beers before tea. Can’t help thinking I’m not making enough use of the free bar so if anyone can get here it’s my round.
