We came back to the West Coast one last time for two reasons: one to check out Legoland, and two to take a small side trip down the coast on a cruise ship.

For those who have (or know of) young (and not so young!) boys, Lego is THE toy for imaginative creating.  For Jakob and Zak, Legoland was like mecca - everything Lego in one place!  We spent an expensive, but fun day creating, viewing and playing.  The favorites were the miniature towns and cities, rollercoasters, and Star Wars vinettes.  This place is awesome for kids of all ages!

Spent a day playing at the beach, feeling very bohemian and wishing that we could surf (that will be a must learn on our next adventure!).  The Pacific Ocean is not too warm at this time of year, but you can still enjoy the warm sunshine and the sand in your toes!

Other than Rene, the rest of us had never gone on a cruise, so we decided to pick up a short 4-day cruise on the Carnival Inspiration out of Long Beach.  This boat does a tour to Catalina Island and Ensenata, Mexico. Older and smaller than new boats, the Carnival Inspiration has updated its facilities to attract families.  The waterpark with slides was fun but cold, and the outdoor seawater pool was atrocious - small and cold!  We found the staterooms quite good (we got 2 adjoining rooms to save our sanity) and the food decent, albeit repetitive.  Most of the programs and shows were at night which was nice for the adults but not great for the kids.  Stellar dining room staff (we loved Elena!) and friendly cabin stewards.  The ports of call did not interest us so we hung out on the ship enjoying the peace and quiet.  Seasickness was kept to a minimum (thank you Lord!), although we had stocked up on every antinausea treatment possible!  Overall we found out that cruise ships are not our thing - we like our space and lots of options for swimming and playing - but we did enjoy a break from homeschooling, cooking and cleaning.

Time to leave the coast and head back inland - next destination Coachella Valley - the desert home of wealthy retirees, Hollywood stars and the rest of the riffraff!!
