Dinosaur Trail RV Park

Located about 1  1/ 2 hours northeast of Calgary is Drumheller, in the Badlands of Alberta.  This is where some of the most important dinosaur fossil discoveries in the world were made.  Home to the famous Tyrannosaurus Rex.  The Royal Tyrrell Museum is a world class facility showcasing incredible exhibits and housing a laboratory in which technicians are still unearthing fossils millions of years old.  We also hiked and biked along paths through the area - a barren landscape with its own stark beauty.  Vastly changed from the land it once was during the era of the dinosaur which was tropical jungle and primordial seas.  Drumheller was originally settled for mining coal and some gold, but soon lots of strange and awesome fossils were being unearthed.

Also part of the landscape are the fabled Hoodoos, cone shaped earth/rock with a flat ledge on the top.  Shaped by the water and wind, the tops are harder than the sides and so they are shaped into wonderful silhouettes.  Took one of the last ferries in Alberta pulled across a river by tow cable.  Viewed canyons where horses were once lost and cowboys stole.

We all enjoyed the history and dramatic landscape, even with the hot temperatures.  Our RV campground had a pool and in the evenings coyotes came out to sing!  Badlands are good!\

On our way to our next stop we could not resist a quick stop for lunch at Vulcan Alberta. A quiet town that has reinvented it self as the home of Star Trek. There is a small space ship that houses Star Trek memorabilia and a replica of the U.S.S Enterprise. May we all live long and prosper !!

The badlands seem like something from another planet. Fitting that they are close to Vulcan.
