Tonight we are going to dinner with Gilles and his wife
We had an amazing time with Marlin's co-worker and his family. We arrived late which is customary I guess. We were warmly greeted by Gilles and his wife and son Elliot. Elliot is Vietnamese and the cutest thing ever. He was in the middle of dinner in the kitchen and came running out of the kitchen to kiss both Marlin and I on the cheek. He talked non stop in French and was the center of attention. Gilles home is lovely. It is a cement construction with hot water running through the floors and a lovely large kitchen that is easily closed to the common room. He loves to cook and it smelled lovely. We had some sparkling wine ( which we tasted whole wine tasting with him) and snacks in the living room. Elliot was sitting on a stool looking at magazines which remind me of the sears Christmas catalog. He ran to the kitchen and carefully brought back a pair is scissors so he could cut out what he wants for Christmas and put in very neatly in a clear file folder. When Elliot and his mom went to go get ready for bed, the 3 of us went to see Gilles wine room. Yes room! He knocked the cement floor out and put in pea stone to control the moisture. He has bottles as old as 1968. He has quite a collection and was happy to talk about it. We came up stairs and Elliot was sitting the couch that Marlin and I were sitting on. He is in kindergarten and he sat between us and pretended to read the color book to us. This was after he asked Marlin to read the book to him, but it was all in french and Marlin was at a loss for words. His parents took a picture and were encouraging him to read. He was so fun! He soon gave us a good night kiss and went to bed.
We chatted a while and I was impressed with both of their English. We were moved into the dining room and we had FONDUE!!!! It was soooooooo good. It was 3 kinda of cheese with garlic and tomatoes. Marlin had never had it before but more then once asked if I had a pot like this, and why have we never had it!!! Guess we will be having fondue soon!!! We had a charcuterie plate with lots of meats and capers and onions and pickles. I was in heaven! We had good white wine and had some great laughs. Dessert and coffee was next with a plater of eclairs and pastries. Holy moly. It was so good. We had to excuse ourselves because it was 1030 pm and we need to leave by 530 am for the airport. Yawn!
As we left I did the standard 2 kiss on the cheek! They smile and squeezed my hand. I hope that was a good sign and not "whew you have onion breath!" We waved goodbye and headed out.
So here we sit in the car on our way back to Switzerland from France (yeah we drive to other countries for dinner. Don't you?) and the first thing that Marlin says is "man I have to pee". Background....before we went I told him that in my reading about French culture it said to not assume that you are welcome into their kitchen or to use their bathroom. So here we both sit having to go BAD! To keep our mind off of it we keep taking about fondue. Marlins comment for the evening " I saw how they dipped the bread and let it sit on their plate for a minute and the cheese hardened. It was awesome!!!" As you can tell he had a good time! Gilles actually told us that they fondue mostly in the winter and when they ski. He remembered that when were talking last week that I said it had been ages and that I loved it. This fondue was like none I have had before. He also said that if you dropped your bread in the fondue pot you had to do whatever they told you ( like a dare). Marlin must have double speared his bread because I am pretty sure I saw white knuckles. Who knew we could talk about fondue for so long.
We made it back without a pit stop! We have our bags packed and are planning an early alarm. I'll write again when I get stateside. I can hardly wait!!
