Marlin and I got up early this morning and headed to catch a train to Zurich. We initially were going to drive, but found that the train was faster and more relaxing. We left the car in Basle and will be returning there on Tuesday. The train ride was lovely. We went through mountains and into a valley that was super foggy. After an hour we came to Zurich. It is pretty big and lots of people were moving and shaking. The train station was huge! We literally walked across the street to our hotel. Muffy! We were greeted by the door man who wanted my bag. I however was layered with coat, backpack and purse and taking it off was a bit of a hassle. He just kept asking for it and would not leave me alone. I felt like I had a a bellhop shark following me. We were presented with warm washcloths. I thought to myself that I would love to give the ole pits a swipe, but that may come across a bit rude. I thought better and washed my hands. I can only imagine what Marlin was going to do. Apparently he is a bit more traveled then I and knew exactly what to do. Our room is lovely and this place has bowls of fruit on each floor. We may have scammed a few tangerines. Dang they were good (afraid of scurvy and all). We unpacked a bit and as I was reading through the travel guide I caught something moving out of the corner of my eye. Yep. The bed was not only memory foam but one that has elevation of the head and feet. If he would have kept going Marlin would have looked like he was in one of those infomercials We headed out for a self guided tour that was from an app that I got for Switzerland. Pretty awesome. It was a fully downloaded app that had maps and history. We got a bit off track and walked in and out down streets and across bridges all the way to the tip of Lake Zürich. It is amazing! Not only was it 70 some degrees but the sun was out, there were people milling around and street performers were doing things that I could hardly grasp. Clearly Marlin figured them out! We checked out boat tours and then it happened.....I heard a POLKA!!! I looked across the road and saw a huge blue and white tent and could have sworn I heard " I don't want her, you can have her, she's to fat for me". One look and Marlin knew. We're were going in!!! It was OKTOBERFEST!!! They had picnic tables and benches and women running around dirndls. We found a table towards the back and took it all in. Our first Order of beer ( yes 1st) we just asked for 2 steins of what she was carrying. We soon felt shorted when the people next to us got the liter stein. Round 2 was a liter each and fresh Bretz (aka pretzels the size of my head... In know right?!). I asked the Frau if she has any mustard for the pretzels, as in Dijon. She looked me straight in the eye and said "yes but it is 80 franks". I said thanks I'm good. We both started laughing. Damn Americans!!! I really want mustard now! We were laughing watching all the people standing on tables and dancing to....wait for it..... West Virginia... Mountain mama... I was in tears! Soon it was a sing along to Amarillo and some song that reminded me of sweet Caroline in the sense that there were our own verses...theirs was "Alice? Who the $@*€ is Alice?" I need to find this song!! The band was in full on Swiss garb and took a break. In the mean time we put our beer away and watched the people. When I say people i also mean families with wee ones gumming on mugs of beer and pretzels and who doesn't bring their dog to a beer tent. Apparently that is the thing to do! There was a ton of cleavage and plenty of men in super tight pants and knee socks. The toupees and swiss cougars were out too. I only wish we could have taken more pics without getting noticed! the band came back with an elvis set and for some reason I think they knew the words better then we did!! They do a cheers often amd neither of us could figre out what they were saying. It sounds like "this is bullshit" but we could have been wrong! I attempted to buy a hat but sure enough too small. Thanks Al!
We staggered out of the tent and realized that some of our walk was uphill. Crap! And I had to go to the bathroom. I attempted a McDonald's but the doors were key coded. We found a place called Sam's where we had a Hawaiian pizza with herbs and some Swiss chocolate gelato!!! Needless to say we came back to the hotel I took a "nap" for 2 hrs and then was wishing diary was more of a friend then a foe! This hotel room would be considered flammable to US standards. We are gearing up for another great day! Tomorrow we are looking for a tour to take us up the side of the mountains!!! Güten Nächt!
