Today I started my work with Soft Power. I went into the village of Buleeba with a local girl, Jessica, where we did malaria follow-up interviews. It was great, although not speaking the local language was a bit frustrating. It is also hard. I have never before witnessed such extreme poverty firsthand. It was actually a very surreal experience for me... some of the children we saw in the village had disdended stomachs and orange-ish hair, which are signs of malnourishment...very sad. The people we met in the village were so friendly and seemed like such genuinely good people, and yet so many of them live in such extremely poor circumstances. The world is not such a fair place.
I'm still trying to adjust from the jet-lag...I've been going to bed as soon as it gets dark, about 7 o'clock here. I'm going to have to try to stay up! There were thunderstorms today and the power's out. I guess I'll be reading by flashlight tonight...I'm reading Blink which is really good so far. Okay, more soon...
