It had been three years in discussion, six months in the planning, countless trips to STA Travel on Bold St and endless weekends of saving my tips at Palm Sugar. Now, finally, we were lined up in the departure lounge at Manchester airport having our pasty faces photographed by relatives before we departed on our round the world trip. The three of us, myself, Miller and Higham, had had plans of travelling after uni since as far back as first year, as had Garvey, although he would only be able to take part in the first leg through Asia due to commitments to study turtles in Greece through a university placement. Foy was the next to sign up, and having travelled though Europe on an InterRailing trip with him a couple of years previous, I knew his sometimes inappropriate and cringeworthy outbursts would be offset by similarly frequent moments of high entertainment value. Higham's friend from work Danny also expressed an interest in joining us, and even though none of the rest of us had met him previously we welcomed him with open arms all the same. The last to throw his hat into the ring (almost as we were packing our bags) was Luke, who would be leaving with Garvey after Asia while the remainder of us would spend a year working in Australia before taking in Fiji and New Zealand, and hopefully (depending on how many dollars and cents were saved) the Americas.
So that made seven, and as we passed through security we waved goodbye not only to our family members but also to the UK.. for eighteen months at least.
