Having been pleasantly surprised by the trip to Ko Tao it would only be right that the short, no-hassle trip to Ko Phangan would be a waking nightmare. Honestly the catamaran that day witnessed scenes last seen on the Titanic's voyage (people kissing loved ones goodbye, repenting their sins, etc). Both Charlotte and I were sick, as were 70% of passengers. We did, eventually, arrive alive.

We got a taxi to take us to Haad Yao which has a beautiful beach. I suspect it may have been nicer than Chalok on Ko Tao but unfortunately we never got chance to find out; storms had been threatening for a couple of days and had finally arrived. We decided to check out and move to Haad Rin Nai (home to the world famous Full Moon Party), we might as well be somewhere with a nightlife if it's going to rain. The beaches at Haad Rin are ok for sunbathing but take on a whole new use when night falls. Sunrise beach is home to the best party in town.

Scores of vendors sell buckets to drunken travellers who stumble away to watch some fire-throwing, laugh at the worst Ladyboys in Thailand, have a moonlight swim or simply dance like a madman at the many clubs. Although a little tacky and completely devoid of class, this is a cracking party that shouldn't be missed, Charlotte and I were there until gone 3am both nights. Full Moon was only a few days away, the island was getting busier and busier but unfortunately we had to move on.

We really shouldn't have bothered, Ko Samui (where I am now) is horrible. The sex trade is so in your face here it makes me a little sick. Any potential nightspots are sullied with slobbering old men and pole-dancing ladyboys, so we chose where we drank very, very carefully.
