Modern Lulea has one of these rather cold Swedish city centers and can be explored with a brief stroll. Old Lulea 15 km away offers an authentic impression of austere living conditions up in this still northerly area in the 17th century, when the city was given up, just to be revived as UNESCO world cultural heritage about 300 years later.

It is 850 km on ordinary roads from here to Uppsala, our next destination, so it is another day in a car with just a few brief stops to enjoy some views at more attractive points of this long and somewhat uneventful stretch of the Swedish east coast. By comparison to the spectacular scenery along the Norwegian coast this indeed is the less attractive leg of the tour.
